Summary:
The European Reference Framework of Key Competences for Lifelong Learning defined eight key competences:
 Communication in the mother tongue;
 Communication in foreign languages;
 Mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology;
 Digital competence;
 Learning to learn;
 Social and civic competences;
 Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship; and
 Cultural awareness and expression.
These key competences are all considered equally important. They are conceptualised as a combination of knowledge, skills and attitudes and the definition of each key competence states the knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant for it. This approach supported the definition of learning outcomes and its translation into curricula or learning programmes.16
