Abstract:
This investigation focuses on the way educational institutions can stimulate the participation and success-rates of non-western migrant students in higher education. Research points out that these ethnic groups, in comparison with native students, increasingly continue their school career after graduating from secondary education or VET education. The difference mainly lies in the switch from secondary VET to higher professional education (HBO). This shows the importance of secondary VET for the emancipation of ethnic groups. This effect is also shown in other studies. Migrant VET graduates continue their study in higher professional education more often, but also drop-out more often than native students. This is caused by their background and/or previous education. Around one fifth of all VET graduates drops out in the first year of higher professional education.
