The article points to social barriers in education of girls and women. It brings reasons of the fact that until late 19th century women were denied the right to higher education. It depicts the role of governmental institutions mechanisms in origination and development of patriarchal gender stereotypes, and in particular myths about social inutility of women education. It documents inequity in educational opportunities for women and men in some European countries, in particular in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The special attention is paid to social-economic contexts (barriers and stimuli) of girl and women education in Slovakia since 18th century till 1950s.
