A few years ago the Reykjavík Technical College, formerly The Polytechnic College applied for ISO quality assurance. This was done because international agreements of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), of which Iceland is a member and therefore the College, requests international assurance of those institutions and schools that issue certificates in navigation and engine practice. The process of introducing ISO standards is long and complicated, but it resulted in more effective procedures where it is now clear who is to do what and when, besides information now being more readily accessible. Furthermore the staff are more aware of where to turn with various problems, and the quality system secures that a conclusion is reached even in irksome cases.
