This is an intermediate report of the team which studies developmental needs of education in the forestry sector. The team’s task was to examine education in all levels of education in forest, timber and paper sectors. The team seeks to evaluate whether education corresponds to the changes which have occurred in economy. The forestry sector constitutes a small percentage of the nation’s whole education system. For example, forestry degrees comprise only 2-3% of the total degrees. The gross value of forestry production is about 20 billion and it accounts for 20% of total export and about one third for gross export. Educational institutes of forestry are equally dispersed in small units in different parts of the country. Regional coverage is good, but national coordination apparently lacks or is insufficient. On average, 2500 people per year graduate in the field. This accounts for 3% of the corresponding degrees in Finland. It is estimated that by the year 2010, forestry sector needs to recruit about 3000 persons per year.
Tämä väliraportti on osa opetusministeriön asettaman, metsäsektorin koulutuksen kehittämistarpeita selvittävän työryhmän työtä. Työryhmän tehtävänä on tarkastella kaikilla koulutusasteilla metsä puu- ja paperialan koulutusta kokonaisuutena siten, että se ottaa huomioon puun tuottamisen, puun korjuun, metsäbioenergian sekä puun kemiallisen ja mekaanisen jalostamisen.
