Abstract:
On 21 January 2004, the European Commission presented the Joint Employment Report for 2004, part of the European employment strategy. It can be deduced from the government’s reaction that the Netherlands underscores the Commission’s pain points in terms of the situation in the EU job market and in the Netherlands. With regard to the recommendations given to the Netherlands in 2003, the Commission observes the following. Although policy is being pursued in the field of lifelong learning, the Commission has no idea as to what effects are to be expected. It concludes that more work should be done in the Netherlands to further such issues as the close-fitting approach for adults, to promote active ageing and reduce early retirement, as well as improve the integration of migrants both in the school system and the job market.
