Adult education is still an evolving concept and is related to the different development of the issue in the different countries. In Europe, words such as "continuous", "adult" or "permanent" training, until recently, applied to adult training, but not to the awarding of educational qualifications or professional objectives. Today, adult education is considered an integrated system of opportunities aimed at covering the needs matured after basic training, throughout the individual's working life. The essays published in this periodical thoroughly examine certain aspects related to this issue, especially highlighting the guidelines of education policies in Italy and Europe. Particularly in Italy, where there is a heavy training shortage in the adult population, it shall be necessary to develop a new training culture by promoting co-operation between the State, Regional and Local Authorities and outlining the respective responsibilities of each.

L'educazione degli adulti (EDA) è un concetto ancora in piena evoluzione e connesso al diverso sviluppo che il tema ha avuto nelle diverse nazioni. In Europa termini come formazione "continua", "degli adulti" o "permanente" fino a non molto tempo fa indicavano la formazione rivolta alla popolazione adulta, ma non finalizzata al conseguimento di titoli di studio o di obiettivi professionali. Oggi invece, si tende a considerare l'educazione degli adulti come un sistema integrato di opportunità volto a coprire, in tutto l'arco della vita di un individuo, le esigenze maturate dopo la formazione di base. I saggi pubblicati in questa rivista approfondiscono alcuni aspetti connessi a questo tema, mettendo in luce soprattutto le linee della politica dell'educazione in Italia ed in Europa. In particolare in Italia, dove si riscontra un pesante deficit formativo della popolazione adulta, occorre sviluppare una nuova cultura della formazione promuovendo la collaborazione tra Stato, Regioni ed Enti Locali e delineando, nello stesso tempo, i rispettivi ambiti di competenza.
