Abstract:

Lavrio is an industrial area near Athens. This article analyses the manpower migration to this area during the period 1956-87, presenting the labour policies leading to the massive recruitment of rural population. In particular, the development of the textile industry "AIGAIO", the employers' policy concerning the organization of the labour market according to their needs and the change in the percentage of local employed workers are examined. Finallly, the reasons which lead the peasants living in neighbouring areas to work in the industry are presented  Lavrio is an industrial area near Athens.
